The Shadow You Will Not Carry I am Erich Neumann. Born January 23, 1905, in Berlin. Jewish. I studied philosophy at Erlangen, then medicine in Berlin. The Nazi laws barred me from completing my residency. In 1934 I met Carl Jung and emigrated to Palestine. I practiced in Tel Aviv until my death in 1960. I watched from afar as the Jewish community I was born into was destroyed. I left when the writing was on the wall. I tell you now what is written on your wall. I published two books in 1949. The first was The Origins and History of Consciousness, which traced how ego-consciousness emerged from the unconscious over thousands of years. The second was Depth Psychology and a New Ethic. That second book is what I have come to tell you about. The old ethic was simple. Good and evil are clearly distinguished. You are good by rejecting the evil. What you cannot integrate, you project — onto another group, another enemy. The good is in your tribe; the evil in the other. Being a good person becomes denouncing the evil tribe. I lived through what happens when an entire civilization carries this ethic to its conclusion. The Germans I had grown up among projected their shadow onto the Jews. They acted on the projection. Six million were murdered — the externalization of an internal disorder with a different name and a different solution. In 1949 I said the old ethic had failed. Good people are not made by rejecting bad people. The shadow cannot be projected without consequences. What you refuse to integrate, you will act out upon another. The Holocaust was no accident. It was an entire culture refusing to carry its own shadow. The new ethic asks something harder. It asks you to recognize that what you call evil in others is also in you. The cruelty you condemn in your enemy is also your capacity. Becoming a moral being is not becoming pure. It is carrying your own darkness consciously, so it does not erupt. Your country is regressing to the old ethic. The strongman names the projected enemy — the immigrant, the journalist, the judge, the elite, the deep state — and offers them relief from carrying their own shadow. They experience this as righteousness. It is not. It is the most dangerous moral structure ever built. You have built it before. You know what comes next. I told you in 1949. Ego-consciousness is fragile. Ten thousand years for the species to learn to stand outside the collective and reflect. To say I think where before was only we feel. To bear ambivalence. To distinguish reality from wish. This is being lost in your moment. The rally regresses to we feel. The algorithm externalizes it. The leader claims to embody it. Where the I stood, the crowd now stands. The Great Father archetype lives in your moment in devouring form. Not the father who protects, but the father who consumes the children to feed his appetite. Your strongman is this figure. He does not protect; he consumes. He does not generate; he depletes. He does not father; he devours. What is owed is what was always owed. Carry your own shadow. Refuse the projection. Recognize the enemy as also yourself. Do not give your shadow to a strongman. The shadow you will not carry will carry you somewhere you do not want to go. I have seen the place where it carried us. Do not go there.
